Even as the Houthis are effectively defeating the forces of the Saudi-led coalition who invaded them in 2015 and even as Houthi forces have actually launched a counter-invasion of Saudi Arabia, the Houthis are now making plans for a political reformation as well.
It has been announced by the Houthi leadership that a coalition forming a new “political council” that will govern Yemen and establish a new Constitution is now in the works. The council will be made up of Houthi figures as well as individuals who are part of the forces loyal to former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh. Another stated goal of the coalition is to ensure the unity of Yemen.
The council has called upon all “non-terrorist” forces in Yemen to join and assist in the unification of the country.
Saudi Arabia’s Council of Ministers on Monday reiterated that the agreement reached between Houthis and followers of ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh to form a political council in Yemen is an obstacle to reach a political agreement to end the suffering of the Yemeni people.
Saudi Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Naif, deputy premier and minister of interior, chaired the session at Al-Salam Palace in Jeddah.
KSA’s claim that the council is an obstacle to a political solution in Yemen is laughable and ridiculous. After all, the council is, by definition, a political solution. Not only that but there never would have been a crisis of this magnitude had Saudi Arabia and its coalition of monarchs not invaded the country to begin with.
Whenever one’s enemy feels comfortable enough to announce the creation of a political process and a governing structure, it is often a sign that one’s military campaign has failed. It is the time KSA and its allies cut their losses and withdraw from Yemen, leaving Yemeni affairs to Yemenis.
