The Islamic State, commonly referred to as ISIS, has called for “lone wolf” radicalized Americans to take matters into their own hands by finding and attacking U.S. soldiers at their homes.
Fox News reportedly obtained a law enforcement bulletin that warned ISIS fighters have been using social media to spread propaganda and encourage jihadists living in the United States to use Facebook and LinkedIn to locate members of the military.
“You could literally search for soldiers, find their town, photos of them, look for address in Yellowbook or something,” one British jihadist reportedly tweeted. “Then show up and slaughter them.”
As the United States prepares to arm Syrian rebels to fight against ISIS, the Central Florida Intelligence Exchange bulletin – titled “Continued Threat to Military Personnel from Al Qaeda Inspired Homegrown Violent Extremists” -- warns: “These threats will most likely increase should the U.S. or its allies attack the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS) in Syria or Iraq,” reports the Daily Mail.
The bulletin was released on July 18, prior to Tuesday’s arrest of Mufid Elfgeeh, a 30-year-old naturalized citizen from Yemen living in Rochester, New York, who has been charged with attempting to recruit ISIS fighters and kill people in the U.S., reports NBC News.
Peter Boogaard, a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security, responded on Thursday to the threats, saying “there is no credible intelligence at this time to suggest that there is an active plot by (ISIS) to carry out an attack in the United States.”
He continued, “Public posting by people claiming to be (ISIS) supporters on social media threatening to carry out attacks against the United States and our allies have been made, and we are aware of them. The product referenced is based on such open source social media reports from earlier this summer and is not considered to reference specific, credible evidence of a plot against the homeland.”
